About Spray Painting

Spray painting is a technique in which a spraying device is used to coat a surface like furniture, walls, automobiles, etc.

Spray painting is a process in which a device (i.e., a paint sprayer) sprays a coating of paint through the air onto the surface which is to be painted.

There are different types of paint sprayers which are used for spray painting. These are also referred to as spray guns and spray applicators.

While using paint spraying equipment, it is essential that the person wears gloves, goggles and preferably a face mask too, to avoid inhaling the resultant fumes.

How do Paint Sprayers Work?

Paint sprayers or spray guns use a process called ‘Atomization’ to spray the paint onto different surfaces. The spray gun directs the paint onto the surface which is to be painted. This paint is formed using a rotary atomizer or an ultrasonic atomizer or by forcing the paint through spray paint nozzles using pressure.

The basic paint spray equipment include a spray painting gun, a pressurized container of paint, a system of compressed air and flexible tubes which connect all of them to each other. The container of paint is pressurized and the paint flows from that container to the spray gun via the tubes. The pressure in the container of the paint is responsible for this movement. Atomized air is supplied to the tip of the spray painting gun. This air breaks up the paint into small particles and pushes it out of the gun to the surface that is being painted.

Types of Spray Paint

There are a variety of spray paint types available in the market. Some of the commonly used types are listed below:

Canned or Aerosol Spray Paint: This is the most common type of spray paint which is easily available in the market. This consists of a metal aerosol that is highly pressurized and contains the paint. The paint gets atomized and is pushed out of a valve that is operated by depressing it with a finger. The most commonly found use of this kind of equipment is seen in the painting of automobiles, motor cycles, commercial trucks home handyman etc;

Airbrush Spray Paint: In this kind of a spray gun, the compressed air is combined with the paint which is then directed towards the area or surface being painted.

High Volume Low Pressure Paint Spray Equipment: This is similar to the airbrush equipment, but in this case the pressure on the paint is comparatively low. Thus, the spray gun needs lesser pressure, that results in higher volumes of paint being applied to the surface. The advantage of this is that less amount of paint gets sprayed in the air around the surface being painted.

Low Volume Low Pressure Paint Spray Equipment: This is again a bid to improve on the previous type of paint spray equipment. The spray gun needs less pressure and also delivers less volumes of paint on the surface being painted. Thus, there is a double advantage of less paint volumes used and less paint being sprayed into the surrounding atmosphere.

Paint Spray Booths

Paints spray booths are enclosures used to execute the process of spray painting. Normally, when paint spraying operations are conducted, a large amount of paint gets sprayed into the air as well. This paint could get onto other surfaces which may not need painting. That is why paint spray booths find their uses and applications in many industrial settings.

A typical booth contains the spray painting equipment, the surface which is to be painted and the person or operator who will be doing the spray painting. It is extremely essential that these booths have a very good ventilation and air recovery system. This is because the air pressure in the booth will affect the result of the spray painting job, while the ventilation will reduce fire and health hazards. The surface that is being painted is kept on open grid flooring, that ensures that the excess paint from the surface drips and is recycled.

These paint spray booths come in a variety of sizes depending upon their application – especially the size of the surface being painted.
